Natural gas drilling in the United States requires the use of Hydraulic Fracturing, more commonly referred to as Frac, to complete wells. Â The rising demand for Proppant that is required for hydraulic fracturing has created a shortage of proppant domestically.
Manufacturing high quality proppoant starts with raw materials, sand in most situations and carries through a number of process steps to produce and effective product. Â Sand is not an engineered product - it is a natural mineral subject that has to be processed before it can used in hydraulic fracturing.
The percentage of sand grains coarser than 40 mesh in many quality deposits is often less than 20%. Â This is not a new challenge, historically 20/40 is the single most demanded grade. Â The increasing use of 40/70 and finer 100 mesh sands has been on the increase over the last 10 years.
The rise in demand has created a shortage of proppant that is effecting the Oil and Gas Exploration across the country. Â The demand for proppant has also created a shortage for frac equipment. Â Cabot Oil and Gas made statements in a quarterly call earlier this year that "shortage in Frac equipment" delayed projects in the Haynesville Shale.
